Eastern Phoebe nest located at a corner of our front porch. The birds built the nest in the same location as their nest last year. Last spring, Chauntelle and I spent a fair amount of time watching the birds and monitoring the status of the eggs in the nest. When the eggs finally hatched, we tried to keep an eye on the chicks, evaluating their apparent health while keeping an appropriate distance away from the nest. We were looking forward to getting to see the fledglings learn how to fly. Unfortunately, we awoke one Sunday morning to find a ball of regugitated feathers and bone on our front porch. We checked the nest and found that one of the baby birds was missing. The remaining birds were quiet and inactive, but alive. The adult phoebes were nowhere to be seen. As we considered what might have gotten into the nest, my wife saw a large snake crawl out of a porchside flower bed and attempt to work itself from the ground, up the sheer side of the porch, to the corner post three feet above him. That was when we realized that the baby chicks were goners. We kep the snake away, but the parents never came back, and the babies died a few days later. Being a MAN, I took it upon myself to dispose of the dead birds, nest and all. So, I guess what I'm saying is that I hope they have better luck this year, 'cause they have put their nest in the same damn place as last year... Posted by Hello
